The Singing Cello:

Three Doorways into a Warmer, More Singing Sound

Wondering What It Would Take to Make Your Cello Sing?

How often do you find yourself practicing scales, refining your fingering, watching your bow — and yet your cello still doesn't quite sing the way you want it to? You know the music is in there. You just can't seem to get it to come out.

The real challenge usually isn't a lack of effort. It's that we tend to make tone happen through force, when tone actually emerges through release. The richest sounds always come from the same source: a player who is grounded, free, and listening.

In this free workshop, we'll walk through three doorways into a fuller, more singing cello sound — body, bow, and the music itself. You'll leave with practical insights you can take straight into your next practice session.

You Will Learn:

  • Why Tone Begins in the Body — Discover how breath, posture, and grounded weight create the foundation for everything that happens at the string. Less effort, more sound.

  • The Three Variables That Shape Every Note — Get a working understanding of Contact, Weight, and Speed (CWS) — the language behind every nuance of tone. Once you can name them, you can shape them.

  • How to Bring Tone Into Real Music — Using two contrasting examples, we'll explore how each phrase asks for a different combination of the three variables. Tone is not one sound — it's a series of musical choices.

This isn't a workshop about pushing harder. It's about uncovering the quieter, releasable freedom that's already inside your playing — and learning how to bring it out, one phrase at a time.
